Teens & Parents

My work with teens 13 yo -18yo:

Pre-dominantly talk therapy. Frequently, teens don’t want to be there and/or
don’t want to talk. I always give them permission not to talk if they don’t want to and acknowledge they don’t want to be there. This gives them the message that I “get it” and they typically open up after that. Format the same as with younger children.

I typically work closely with parents and will pull parents into sessions if it is in the best interest of the child and if I think it will strengthen their relationship. I also work closely with parents to decide what is the best way to communicate with them, whether by phone or e-mail or sometimes at end of session.

Parents are always welcome to sit in on sessions unless the child does not want it.
Providing a safe environment and developing trust, are the first steps and basis for positive change in your child’s life. I meet the child where he/she is and design interventions based on who they are and what I think will be effective for them.
